Technology originally developed by a KAIST PhD to help his wife with insomnia gains global attention
Healthcare startup Leesol (Co-CEOs Seungwoo Lee and Koo-sung Kwon) announced on the 11th that it will launch a “30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee” trial event to celebrate surpassing 50,000 units sold of its flagship product, Sleepisol.
Leesol also received the Prime Minister’s Commendation at the 2025 Venture & Startup Promotion Awards, held on the 10th, in recognition of its contributions to innovative growth in the startup ecosystem.
As part of the celebration, Leesol will run a special promotion from December 11 to December 25 through its official online store and Naver Smart Store. Customers who purchase a Sleepisol product during the event can use the device for up to 30 days and return it if they are not satisfied, paying only the return shipping cost.
Leesol explained that the event reflects both confidence in its technology and appreciation for customers.
A Technology Born from a Personal Story
Leesol was founded in 2017 by Dr. Seungwoo Lee, a KAIST PhD in Electrical Engineering and co-founder of Samsung Medison. The technology behind Sleepisol originally began as a personal project when Dr. Lee developed a solution to help his wife, who frequently suffered from insomnia due to frequent overseas business travel.
Non-Pharmaceutical Mental Wellness Technology
The Sleepisol series combines several advanced technologies, including:
-
AI-based biometric signal analysis algorithms
-
Microcurrent-based neuromodulation technology (tES)
-
Proprietary brainwave entrainment technology
Together, these technologies provide a non-pharmaceutical solution for sleep and mental wellness.
The device uses microcurrents below 1mA to guide the brain into a stable state, helping relieve insomnia, anxiety, and stress. By stabilizing imbalanced brainwave patterns, the technology helps users achieve deeper and more restorative sleep.
This proprietary brainwave synchronization technology is one of Leesol’s core patented innovations and has gained significant attention in the wearable mental healthcare sector.
Clinically Validated Technology
The core technology behind Sleepisol was validated through joint research with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, focusing on the effectiveness of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) for improving insomnia.
The research findings were published in two SCI-indexed international journals, including:
-
Journal of Affective Disorders
-
Journal of Sleep Research
These publications further demonstrate the scientific validity of Leesol’s technology on the global stage.
Expanding Growth Through Software and Digital Health
Leesol’s growth is also reflected in its digital health ecosystem.
The Sleepisol Bio app, which integrates with Samsung Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch, has achieved:
-
1.2 million global downloads within 10 months of launch
-
More than 100,000 monthly active users (MAU)
The app provides the world’s first personalized sleep management solution based on circadian rhythm analysis.
Sleepisol Bio has also received major global recognition, including:
-
CES 2025 Innovation Award
-
Google Play Best of 2025 – Best for Watches (Top App in 10 Countries)
Growing Global Interest
Koo-sung Kwon, Co-CEO of Leesol, commented:
“Surpassing 50,000 units sold demonstrates that consumers recognize the value of our technology. We are seeing strong interest not only in Korea but also in overseas markets including the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, and Canada.”
He added:
“Through the 30-day trial event celebrating the Prime Minister’s Commendation, we hope more people will experience our technology that improves sleep without relying on medication.”
